Cavan -- We share office space with the DomainTools.com staff, and I can assure you that there is no such practice going on over there!

Not sure about Spry.com's relation to Domain Tools, but for anyone reading this article, absolutely do not use domaintools.com to research domains that you are thinking of purchasing. The same snipers and domain tasters that kellyg warns about are definitely monitoring domaintools.com, whether Domain Tools knows about this or not. The same advice goes for DomainsBot.com. Really, the safest way to register and research domains is to sign up with a trusted registrar and then search for domain names through your admin panel once you've signed in. It's not the fastest way to search for domains, but it will save you a lot of heartache.
